Biographical / Historical

Arnold Sweet became a professor at the Purdue University School of Industrial Engineering in 1973. His research interests included time series forecasting, statistical process control, and reliability. In his free time, he was an avid collector of Purdue University ephemera. He also was an amateur historian who participated in the Tippecanoe County Historical Association and wrote about Purdue University and Tippecanoe County. James Barany was born in South Bend, Indiana in 1930. He was a professor and an associate head of the School of Industrial engineering at Purdue University. He received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Notre Dame in 1953. He served in the U.S. Army for two years. Barany received his master's degree in industrial engineering at Purdue University. He received his Ph.D. in 1961. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Purdue University’s School of Engineering a team of professors/staff decided to expand upon Harold T. Amrine’s book, “Industrial Engineering at Purdue University: The Roots & First Thirty Years” and write a comprehensive history of the School of Engineering. This team included James Barany, Shimon Nof, Brenda Zika, Linda Terhune, and Arnold Sweet. The manuscript this committee worked on was never published but James Barany decided to continue to work on the manuscript after the original committee had disbanded. This manuscript is titled, “The First Fifty Years & Beyond: Purdue University’s School of Industrial Engineering.
