The Earl T. McBee papers primarily comprise a scrapbook titled "Atomic Bomb WWII, Aug. 6, 1945" of news clippings from August 1945, arranged chronologically on dated pages, documenting the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan at the end of World War II. The collection also includes related loose clippings and photographs.

Biographical Information

Earl T. McBee was born in Missouri in 1906. He received his B.S. from William Jewell College in 1929, then earned his M.S. in 1931 and Ph.D. in 1936, both from Purdue University. McBee joined the Purdue chemistry faculty in 1936. He became head of the fluorine chemistry lab and became chair of the department in 1949. He remained chair of the department until 1967. During World War II, McBee conducted atomic research with the Office of Scientific Research and Development and was associated with the Manhattan Project.
