Biographical Information

Herman Dorner was born April 10, 1878, in Lafayette, Indiana. He was the son of Frederick and Margaret E. Dorner, proprietors of extensive Lafayette Greenhouses. He was known as the "Lafayette carnation breeder" and "The great carnation florist".

Herman Dorner received his Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue University in 1900, and his Master of Science from Purdue in 1901. From 1904-05 he was an assistant in the Purdue Botany Department. Dorner served professionally in the following capacities: in 1905 he was the Indiana State Botany Instructor; Wabash Botany Assistant (1906-1907); Illinois Floriculture Associate (1908-1910); Illinois Floriculture Associate Professor and full Professor (1911-1946).

Dorner also organized the Florists Telegraph Delivery. He developed Amaryllis Fleesid, 32 carnation varieties, and various varieties of chrysanthemums. He was the Society of American Florists' 1939 Gold Medal winner and author of American Carnation Society Publications in 1899 and 1901. Herman B. Dorner died in October, 1955.
