Biographical Information

Albert Pruden Carman was born in July 1861 in Woodbury, New Jersey, to Reverend Thomas C. and Phebe C. Pruden. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton) in 1886. While there, he worked as an instructor of physics (1883-1884) and a tutor of math (1884-1887). Carman then joined the faculty of Purdue University as Professor of Physics and Electrical Engineering (1888-1892).

He was a fellow of Experimental Science at the University of Berlin, Germany from 1887-1889. Carman studied at the University of Vienna and a student of the renowned physician and physicist Hermann von Helmholtz at Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany (1895-1896).

Carman worked as a Professor of Theoretical Physics at Stanford from 1892-1896, when he joined the faculty at the University of Illinois. He served as a Professor of Physics and the Head of the Phsyics Department of the University of Illinois from 1896-1929.

Carman married Maude Wheeler Straight on June 21, 1900. He lived in Urbana, Illinois, and died on February 19, 1946.
