Biographical Information

Howard Enders was a native of Enders, Pennsylvania He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Lebanon Valley College in 1897, a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Michigan in 1898, Master of Science degree from Lebanon Valley College in 1900, and Ph.D. degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1906. After serving as a high school teacher and then teacher of biology at Lebanon Valley College, he joined the Purdue University staff as instructor in zoology and biology in 1906. He was the Dean of the School of Science from 1926-1947. He remained at Purdue until his retirement. He taught in several summer sessions at Indiana and Harvard Universities and spent other summers in research work in such tropical areas as British Guiana, Canal Zone, Honduras, and Yucatan. His memberships included the American Academy for the Advancement of Science (officer and executive council member 1928-1933), Indiana Academy of Science, Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. He was active in the Rotary Club of Lafayette and of Venice, Florida, where he made his home following retirement. In the latter city he was also active in the Little Theater organization. He was survived by two daughters and one son.
