Biographical Information

William Brady was born in Lafayette, Indiana on October 28, 1863. He studied chemistry and German at Purdue, receiving his B.S. degree in 1887, and an Analytical Chemist (A.C.) degree in 1889. While earning his master’s degree (1887-1889), Brady also taught as an Assistant Instructor of Chemistry at Purdue.

On June 13, 1889, Brady moved to Chicago and began work at the Chemical Laboratory of the Illinois Steel Company, South Works, where he was promoted to Assistant Chief Chemist in 1893. He briefly left the position from March 1893-1894, to work as an Assistant Station Chemist at the Purdue Experiment Station, before returning to South Works. Brady was appointed Chief Chemist in 1900, and Chemical Engineer in 1907.

Brady was active in several organizations, including the American Chemical Society (1902), American Society for Testing Materials (1908), American Electro Chemical Society (1908), and the Chemists Clubs of Chicago and New York. He was also appointed as Chairman for the Corporation Chemists’ Committee on several occasions.

William Brady passed away on April 22, 1923.

Acquisition Information

Articles "The Determination of Dust in Blast-Furnace Gas," "Determination of Carbon in Steel by the Direct Combustion Method," and "The Methods of the United States Steel Corporation for the Commercial Sampling and Analysis of Pig Iron" donated by William Brady on April 16, 1919. Source and date of acquisition for remaining material are unknown.
