From the description that came with the vellum leaf: "A leaf from a printed Book of Hours done in the early 16th century by the Parisian printer, Antoine Verard. Printing on vellum is difficult at any time, and the early French printers were exceptionally skilled in producing lovely Books of Hours that possessed the charm of the old manuscripts.  At the time that this work was produced, printing was beginning to come into its own as an art, and wood and lead-cut border decorations were replacing the elaborate borders that had characterized the manuscritps.  In these borders in this specimen we see pictures of people of the period faithfully enough drawn, for they have all the attributes of reality.  Furthermore, there is a charm in their quaint 16th century costumes.  The touch of the illuminator is not lacking; the initial letter is set in by hand, gold letters traced on a rich burgundy-colored background."
