Biographical Information

Russell G. East was born May 17, 1884 at Worthington, Greene County, Indiana. His father was Ziba P. East, farmer and livestock man. He attended elementary school and high schools at Worthington and engaged in farming in Greene County. East attended agricultural short course sessions at Purdue University where in 1909 he was secretary of the first Indiana corn, livestock and poultry judging school. He later became manager of the Worthington Experimental Farm for Purdue University.

He was president of the Indiana Corn Growers' Association, 1904-05. County Agricultural Agent for Shelby County, Indiana, 1917-1923. He was widely known for his efforts as General Agricultural Agent, Pennsylvania Railroad, 1923-1943. He was also known for his research and support for growing soybeans, and his marketing efforts by using a railroad car to promote soybeans. Other offices he held were president of the Indiana Poland China Hog Breeders' Association, Member of the Indiana State Board of Agriculture, 1924-1934; president, 1933. President of the American Railway Development Association, 1931. Member of the Board of Governors, National Farm Chemurgic Council, 1938-43 and Chairman.
