Biographical Information

Edwin Mortimer Blake was born in New York City on June 16, 1868, to Captain Charles Henry Blake and Sarah Louise Belden. Edwin Mortimer Blake married Josephine St. Felix Wittichen (1868-1940) in Brooklyn, New York on June 20, 1900. They had two children, Charles Henry (b. 1901) and Edwina St. Felix (b. 1903). He passed away on December 23, 1955. He attended Public School No. 11 in Brooklyn, NY, from September 1878 until his graduation and entrance at the Central Grammar School of Brookly in February 1884. He left in January 1886 to prepare for entrance at the School of Mines, Columbia College, where he began in October 1886.

Blake earned his E.M. (Engineer of Mines) degree from Columbia's School of Mines in June 1890. He was a Fellow in Mechanical Engineering there from November 1890 to July 1891. Blake became a University Fellow in Mathematics at Columbia College from July 1891 to July 1893. He was employed during portions of the summers of 1890 and 1891 by the University of the State of New York to do geological field-work in Westchester County, New York. Blake was admitted to the New York Mathematical Society in December 1891.

Blake earned his PhD from Columbia College (New York City) in 1893 and became a Mathematics Instructor at Barnard College the same year. He was appointed as a professor of Mathematics at Purdue University in 1896. He retired in 1898 to accept a position as a professor of mathematics at University of California - Berkeley. In 1901 he agreed to head the department of mathematics at the University of Arizona.
