Biographical Information

Louise Poitevin, or Rosalie Goujon, was a French professional balloonist and skilled parachute jumper. Her career spanned thirty years and she participated in 581 flights. Poitevin worked with her second husband, Eugene Poitevin, and the two performed balloon flights and parachute displays across Europe. In 1852, she sparked public outrage and was charged with animal cruelty when she performed a balloon flight dressed as Europa astride a bull. Louise Poitevin was born in Paris on June 3, 1819 and died April 3, 1908.
