Biographical Information

Dame Millicent Garrett Fawcett (1847-1929) was an author, lecturer, and leader for the women's suffrage movement in England. She wrote and delivered articles and speeches on women's education, women's suffrage, and other issues of the time.

Fawcett was born Millicent Garrett on June 11, 1847 in Suffolk, England. Her husband, Henry Fawcett, was a Cambridge professor of political economy and a Liberal MP. They had one child together, Philippa Fawcett.

In the 1890's, Fawcett became the leader of the women's suffrage movement in England. She led a committee that campaigned on behalf of local suffrage societies which later became the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS). Unlike the militant campaign of the Pankhursts, Fawcett and the NUWSS stuck to constitutional or legal methods of protests and demonstrations.

Fawcett died on August 5, 1929 in London, England.
