Historical Information

Africana Studies and Research Center was established at Purdue University in 1975 under the leadership of Dr. Samuel Hay, faculty member in Creative and Visual Arts, as a resource to encourage existing departments to include African American experiences in their courses and to support the work of students focused on the subject. The program began offering its own courses in 1978.

The program changed its name to African American Studies Center in the 1980s before becoming African American Studies and Research Center, and continued to develop curriculum and support for faculty and students at Purdue.
