Historical Information

The Association for Women Students served to represent the interests of and create community for women students on Purdue's campus. This organization was formed in 1920 by the Purdue Girls' Club as the Woman's Council. Their purpose was for women's self-governance and dealt with all matters concerning students not covered by faculty or student council. In 1923, the Woman's Council merged with the Purdue Girls' Club under the latter name, however this was reversed in 1925 and the Purdue Girls' Club became the Woman's Council. In addition to providing self-governance to women students, the council held social gatherings previously organized by the Purdue Girls' Club.

In 1929, the council was chartered under the national organization, Women's Self Government Association (W.S.G.A.), and renamed as such. The purpose of this national organization was to "consider and take action upon all problems which college women are forced to meet, and to make wise and reasonable rules of conduct for them to follow." The organization established codes of conduct and held social events for women students. In 1941, W.S.G.A. changed its to the Associated Women Students (A.W.S. or AWS) and began offering counselling services to freshman women. From 1976-1989, Associated Women Students and Association for Women Students were used interchangeably and by 1990, Association for Women Students is exclusively used. The last mention of AWS was in 2001.
